Ubuntu updates bricked my Lenovo t500 laptop again. They messed up the graphic drivers for ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 and left me without a decent graphic interface. To repair this mess, do the following:

  • go to the www.amd.com site and download the new drivers (ati-driver-installer-11-8-x86.x86_64.run). The easiest way to do this is to use another computer...

    • in grub choose  save/rescue mode, then choose any option that ends in console,
    • remove the old drivers:

      $ sudo /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh # (if it exists,

                                            # I used --force option!)

      $ sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx*

    • after that reboot the machine

    • install the new drivers with the downloaded script:

      $ ati-driver-installer-11-8-x86.x86_64.run # (I used --force option)

    • After this, reboot the machine and cross your fingers...
